Raid 1 or Raid 0?

Many people these days are using some sort of raid array on their computer system. This is done for several reasons and the type of raid depends on what you want it to do for you. Here I will briefly explain the two most commonly used configurations.

Raid 1

If you are wanting a backup solution then you would want to go with Raid 1. This is known as mirroring. This will use two identical hard drives and the second drive will be a mirrored image of your first drive. This is a good backup system but you should still backup your data to another source also. At least your most important stuff. This could be an external hard drive, dvd burner or a tape drive. The reason for this is that both drives could get damaged at the same time so this possibility should be considered.

Raid 0

If you are wanting to improve the performance of your computer you would want to go with Raid 0. This is known as striping. This will use two or four identical hard drives and is commonly recommended for those wanting high write speed, audio and video streaming and editing, graphic design and high end gaming. There are other types of raid also but these are the two most commonly used.
